You’ve packed the boxes, booked the removal team, and mentally said goodbye to your old place. Then the phone rings. The chain’s collapsed. Completion’s been pushed back. The new home isn’t ready. Suddenly, everything you own is loaded onto a lorry with nowhere to go.
It happens more often than you’d think. And when it does, emergency storage becomes less of a nice-to-have and more of a lifeline.
At Roy Trevor, we’ve been helping families and businesses navigate exactly these situations for over 100 years. Here’s how emergency storage works, when you might need it, and why our demountable container system takes the stress out of an already stressful day.
When Moving Day Doesn’t Go to Plan
Whether you’re moving house or relocating a business, delays and disruptions are far more common than most people realise. Some of the most typical scenarios we see include:
Property chains breaking down
One delay in the chain can leave everyone stranded on moving day with a lorry full of furniture and no keys.
Completion dates shifting
solicitors, mortgage lenders, and surveyors don’t always work to your timeline.
New premises not ready
Whether it’s renovations running over at home or a fit-out delay at your new office, sometimes the building simply isn’t ready when you are.
International shipping delays
If you’re moving to or from Europe, customs clearance or ferry schedules can create unexpected gaps between leaving one property and arriving at the next.
Lease timing mismatches
For businesses, the end of one lease doesn’t always align neatly with the start of another.
In every one of these situations, the question is the same: where do your belongings go in the meantime?
How Emergency Storage Works with Roy Trevor
This is where our demountable container system really comes into its own. Unlike traditional self-storage, where you’d need to unload everything from the removal vehicle, transport it into a unit, and then repeat the whole process when you’re ready to move again, our approach is designed to minimise handling and keep things simple.
Here’s how it works:
Our modern fleet of vehicles is fully intermodal, with a unique feature that allows the removal body to lift out of the vehicle. Your belongings are loaded carefully on moving day as normal. If your move hits a problem, our team simply drives back to one of our secure facilities in Warrington, Winsford, or Arley, and the entire container is demounted from the vehicle and placed into storage. No double-handling. No unloading and reloading into a separate unit. Your things stay exactly as they were packed, safely inside the unit, under 24/7 CCTV monitoring.
When you’re ready to complete your move, the unit is remounted onto the vehicle and delivered straight to your new address. It’s that straightforward.
Why This Matters for Your Belongings
Every time your belongings are handled, there’s a risk of damage. The beauty of the demountable system is that your items are only loaded once and unloaded once, at your new property when you’re ready. In between, they stay packed and secure in the same container, protected in a fully insured, CCTV-monitored facility with strict access control.
This matters just as much for businesses as it does for homeowners. If you’re relocating an office, a laboratory, or a data centre, the last thing you need is sensitive equipment being loaded and unloaded multiple times because of a delay that’s outside your control.
Planning for the Unexpected
While nobody wants to think about their move going wrong, having a contingency plan is always sensible. If you’re working with Roy Trevor for your removal, emergency storage is already built into our capability, there’s no need to scramble for a separate storage provider if something changes at the last minute.
We’d always recommend raising the possibility with your removal company early on, especially if your move involves a property chain, an international element, or any situation where timing is tight. Knowing that your removal company can pivot to storage at short notice gives you one less thing to worry about on what’s already a big day.
