If you’re planning a house move and there’s a piano involved, it’s probably the one item giving you sleepless nights. Pianos are heavy, awkward, delicate, and often irreplaceable: a combination that makes them one of the trickiest things to relocate safely.
An upright piano typically weighs between 150kg and 400kg, while a grand piano can easily exceed 500kg. They’re also packed with over a thousand moving parts, fragile hammers, and strings under immense tension. A knock in the wrong place can throw the whole instrument out of tune, or worse, cause structural damage that’s expensive to repair.
At Roy Trevor, our team has been moving specialist items like pianos, grandfather clocks, and antiques for over 100 years. Here’s what you need to know about getting your piano from one home to another in one piece.
Why You Shouldn’t Move a Piano Yourself
We’ll be upfront about this: moving a piano without professional help is risky, both for the instrument and for the people attempting it. Here’s why:
- Weight and balance.
Even a modest upright piano is heavier than most people expect, and the weight isn’t evenly distributed. One slip on a staircase or doorstep can cause serious injury. - Internal damage.
Pianos are precision instruments. Jolts, tilting at the wrong angle, or vibrations during transit can damage the soundboard, shift the tuning pins, or snap strings. - Property damage.
Manoeuvring something this size through doorways, down hallways, and over thresholds puts your walls, floors, and door frames at real risk of scratches, dents, and worse. - Insurance gaps.
If you damage your piano during a DIY move, your home insurance is unlikely to cover it. A professional removal company will have appropriate goods in transit insurance in place.
How Professionals Move a Piano
When you book a house removal with Roy Trevor that includes a piano, here’s roughly what to expect:
Pre-Move Survey
During your initial home survey, we’ll assess the piano: its type, size, weight, and location within the property. We’ll also check the route out of your home: doorway widths, staircases, tight corners, and access to the vehicle. This is where we plan exactly how the move will happen, so there are no surprises on the day.
Protection and Wrapping
Our team will lock the keyboard lid (or secure it shut), wrap the entire piano in specialist removal blankets, and use protective padding on corners and legs. For grand pianos, the legs and pedal assembly are typically removed, and the body is carefully lowered onto its side using a piano shoe or skid board before being wrapped and secured. Our professional packing service ensures every component is fully protected.
Moving and Loading
Using specialist equipment: piano dollies, heavy-duty straps, and ramps. The team will carefully move the piano through your home and into the removal vehicle. For upright pianos, this usually means tilting slightly and rolling on a dolly. Grand pianos travel on their side, secured onto a skidboard. Throughout the process, floor runners and protective coverings are laid down to prevent damage to your property.
Transit and Delivery
Once inside the vehicle, the piano is strapped securely against the back wall to prevent any movement during transit. At your new home, the process is reversed with the same level of care – the piano is unloaded, unwrapped, reassembled if needed, and placed in your chosen room.
Upright Piano vs Grand Piano: What’s Different?
Upright pianos are generally easier to move because of their more compact shape, but don’t underestimate them – a full-size upright can still weigh 300kg or more. They’re moved upright on a specialist dolly, and the main challenge is usually navigating stairs and tight hallways.
Grand pianos and baby grands require more preparation. The legs, pedals, and music stand are removed, and the body is lowered carefully onto its side. A skidboard supports the piano during transit. Because of the additional disassembly and the sheer size of the instrument, grand pianos take more time and more hands on deck.
At Roy Trevor, our team is trained to handle baby grand pianos, concert grand pianos, and upright pianos as part of our specialist items removal service.
What If You Need to Store Your Piano Between Moves?
Sometimes your new home isn’t ready when you are. If your move hits a delay, your piano can be safely stored in one of our demountable storage containers at our secure, CCTV-monitored facilities in Warrington, Winsford, or Arley. The beauty of this system is that your belongings, piano included, stay packed in the same container without needing to be unloaded and reloaded. Less handling means less risk of damage.
For longer-term needs, we also offer long-term storage options. Pianos should ideally be stored in a dry, temperature-stable environment to prevent warping and corrosion of the strings, and our warehouse facilities are designed with exactly that in mind.
Tips to Prepare Your Piano Before Moving Day
While we’ll handle the heavy lifting, there are a few things you can do to help the process go smoothly:
- Clear the route. Remove rugs, furniture, and anything else that could obstruct the path from the piano to the front door.
- Measure your doorways. If you know the dimensions are tight, let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
- Don’t try to tune it beforehand. A piano will almost always need retuning after a move, so save your money and book a tuner once it’s settled in your new home.
- Think about placement at the new property. Avoid positioning your piano against exterior walls, near radiators, or in direct sunlight – temperature fluctuations and moisture can damage the wood and affect the tuning.
- Tell us about it early. The more notice we have, the better we can plan the right team and equipment for your moving day.
